Dudley Ladies Running Club
Has Now Regrettably Come To An End.
Dudley Ladies Running Club was a ladies only road running club that catered for women of all ages and abilities.
The club which was affiliated to the Association of Running Clubs was formed by Rita Vanes in July 2002 and it grew to become the largest women-only road running club in the Midlands, accommodating ladies from absolute beginners up to seasoned marathon runners but due to all the hassle and problems created by the recent Covid pandemic, it folded on Sunday 16th May 2021.
At its peak in the summer, the club had around 200 established members.
The youngest members were in their teens and the oldest were in their 70's. The smallest were size extra small and the largest extra-extra large. Some were housewives, some were career women and some were students.
Beginners Courses were run every year for women who had either never run before or wanted to get back into it after taking a break.
The way the group was organised guaranteed that whatever their standard or whenever they came, they would fit in somewhere, they didn't have to be a world beater, it wasn't a club for poseurs, there were no little clichés or cattiness, they didn't have to fit in to a size 8 leotard and once joined, nobody ever "really" left.
There was no stress and no pressure put on people to compete or race and there were no men around to make the ladies run faster or further than they wanted to.
They graduated to their own level, in their own time and made the move to go faster or further or enter any races when they were ready within the safety and security of a group. No one was ever left to run on their own!
The club thrived on its active social side and evenings out to Balti’s', restaurants, discos and anywhere else that the girls can let their hair down and dress up were regularly organized to ensure that everybody had a good time.
