Hi my name is Becky Maynard and I am the researcher for
a Channel 4 documentary in association with the British Sumo Federation. We
are helping the Sumo Federation to find ladies to form a team to represent
Great Britain in the sumo World Championships. The British Sumo Wrestling
Federation will be training the first ever British team of female Sumo
Wrestlers. In October, that team will then go on to represent Great Britain
at the Women’s Sumo World Championships in Japan. At the moment, Britain
has only one competitive female sumo wrestler, called Jackie Bates (shown
above) – a 20 stone lady who is a true inspiration. The British Sumo
Federation are looking for other strong women to get involved in sumo
wrestling, to form Britain’s first all woman sumo wrestling team and
represent Great Britain in Japan. The training and the Championships will
be filmed as part of a one hour, one off Channel 4 documentary. All the
training will be conducted by the British Sumo Wrestling Federation in Derby
The link below should take you to a newspaper article
that will give you a bit more information on Jackie and the sport.

At the moment we are busy looking to find strong,
determined women who might be interested in putting themselves forward for
team selection. We are looking for women who are
approximately 90kg and over; for motivated larger ladies who will rise to
the challenge of competing. Do you know anyone who would be
interested in taking part? Would anyone from Dudley Ladies be interested in
getting more information?
If you can think of anyone, I’d be grateful if you
could email me back or you can call me on: 0207 013 4598.
Kind regards,
Becky Maynard
